H.R. 2749 The Food Safety Enhancement Act Update:
Please contact your Representative today and help preserve local growers and farmers markets rights.
I am amazed at how you can mention this bill to people and no one seems to know much about it, and that means no one is thinking about how it will impact a Saturday morning foray at their farmers market, assuming there still is a farmers market to explore.
The House of Representatives is working on H.R. 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009. It’s an attempt to address the worst problems in U.S. agriculture, but as it stands the bill threatens to undermine the best things in U.S. agriculture – small farmers producing food for local markets
H.R. 2749 needs to draw a clear line between small local processors and direct market growers selling locally – and the industrial, multi-sourced food supply chains where food borne pathogens have appeared and have created problems in the past. (Spinach, peppers, peanuts, and hamburger recalls were not items purchased from your local farm grower.)
